For Her Achievements in Computer Science: Ute Schmid Honoured as GI Fellow

Since 2002, the “Gesellschaft für Informatik“ (GI) has honoured people who have rendered outstanding services to the GI and computer science. This year, the award also goes to a computer scientist from Bamberg.

“Ute Schmid is an internationally recognised expert on learning systems and head of the Chair of Cognitive Systems at the University of Bamberg.” This is how the Gesellschaft für Informatik, the professional association of computer scientists in Germany, describes her in its press release. In addition to her merits in the field of AI research, her commitment to women in computer science also qualifies her for the special award. Moreover, in the research group elementary informatics (FELI), it is  her goal to spark interest for computer science already in pre-school and primary school.

She is one of 113 people to have received this honour so far. Also honoured this year were Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dieter Fellner, who researches digital libraries and 3D data, the former Federal Data Protection Commissioner Peter Schaar and database architect Dr.-Ing. Harald Schöning. The list of renowned personalities includes only one other Bamberg resident. In 2017, Prof. Dr. Elmar J. Sinz, founding dean of the WIAI faculty, was honoured for his information systems research in the field of modelling.
