Directions to Bamberg for Long Distance Travellers

By Train

Bamberg is a regular stop on the ICE rail line between Berlin and Munich. IC and ICE connections to and from Stuttgart, Frankfurt or Hamburg are possible in Würzburg or Nuremberg. Average travel times between Bamberg and these locations are as follows:

  • Frankfurt/Main approx. 2,5 hours
  • Munich approx. 2,5 hours
  • Berlin approx. 4 hours
  • Hamburg approx. 4,5 hours
  • Frankfurt Airport approx. 3 hours
  • Munich Airport approx. 3,5 hours

You can reach us on foot from the Bamberg train station in approximately 30 minutes or you can take a bus. Unfortunately there is no direct bus connection from the train station, which means that you will have to change buses at ZOB (central bus terminal). Numerous buses to the ZOB leave from the bus stop across the street (to the right) from the station. From ZOB, transfer to the 906 line towards Gaustadt/ Bischberg and get off at the stop with the name “An der Spinnerei.”

By Plane

The nearest commercial airport is the Nuremberg airport. From there, it is a 12-minute ride on the U2 underground line to Nuremberg’s central railway station where you can transfer to a train to Bamberg.

For visitors traveling internationally, flights flights to Frankfurt/Main or to the Munich airport are usually more convenient. It is possible to take an ICE directly from the Frankfurt airport to Würzburg, where there are regular connections to Bamberg. From the Munich airport, it is possible to take a commuter train (S-Bahn) to the central station and from there an ICE connection directly to Bamberg, or a connection with a transfer in Nuremberg.

By Car

Bamberg is located on the A70 and A73 motorways. From the A70, take the “Bamberg Hafen” motorway exit in the direction of Bischberg (this road is the B26) and take the first exit from this road. Drive towards Bamberg / Gaustadt on the “Gaustadter Hauptstraße” until you reach the Erba-island (Erba-Insel). Turn left at “An der Spinnerei” and follow this street for approximantely 100m. The entrance to the underground parking garage is located at the end of the street. Parking is available for a fee and the first deck is reserved for short-term parking.

From the parking garage to the Software Technologies Research Group: Use the exit labelled “E” and take the lift to “Ebene 0.” The university building is on the left when exiting the lift.

Tip for using navigation devices: enter the address as “An der Spinnerei,” as the street “An der Weberei” (official postal address) is not included in all device registries.

Using Public Transport

Bamberg is part of the VGN (Nuremberg’s transport network), meaning that only one ticket is necessary for travel to many places in Middle and Upper Franconia. In the Bamberg municipal region and surrounding areas, bus lines are supported by Bamberg’s public services. The Websites of the ÖPNV provide all information and bus timetables (German only). Tickets can be purchased at ticket machines or from drivers.

From ZOB (central bus terminal), take the 906 line towards Gaustadt/ Bischberg. Get off at the “An der Spinnerei” stop and walk approximately 50m in the direction the bus is driving. Turn right and cross the bridge to the Erba-Island. After approximately 200m, there is a large brick building on the left. In the middle of this building there is a passage through to the university courtyard. Our offices are located in the large white and grey building on the far side of the courtyard.

In the Building

Use the entrance on the left (near the bicycle parking area) and take one of the two lifts to “Ebene 3.0 – Büroräume.” After leaving the lift, turn right and then immediately left, go through the glass door and then turn left into the side hallway after a few metres. After passing through another glass door, you will find our offices on the left.
