Chair for Computational Humanities

The Chair of Computational Humanities combines computer science with questions from the humanities and cultural studies. The focus is on the computer-aided analysis and synthesis of acoustic data such as music, sounds, or soundscapes, often in combination with other media such as images, videos, or text.

Key research areas include digital musicology, soundscape research—which examines acoustic environments in urban and natural spaces—and the digital preservation of cultural heritage. This research employs modern methods of signal processing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

The goal of the professorship is to gain new insights into music, sound, and culture; to link technological innovations with knowledge from the humanities; and thereby to create societal value.
