The Computational Humanities Chair takes a strongly interdisciplinary approach and focuses primarily on the analysis and synthesis of audio and music data.
One research focus lies in the field of digital humanities, such as research on digital cultural heritage, geospatial applications, and digital musicology, where methods of music information retrieval and the computer-aided analysis of musical performances take center stage.
Another area of research involves the study of soundscapes in a variety of application contexts: from the analysis of noise in urban environments to the recognition of animal calls in bioacoustics and the understanding of complex acoustic scenes.
Methodologically, the research combines signal processing techniques with methods of artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning. On the one hand, explainable AI approaches are being developed to link data-driven results with the expert knowledge of the relevant disciplines. On the other hand, the chair is investigating methods for the multimodal integration of audio data with other data modalities such as video and text.
