Curriculum Vitae
Jakob Abeßer has been a professor of Computational Humanities at Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg since September 2025. He received his diploma in computer engineering from the Technical University of Ilmenau in 2008 and earned his doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) in media technology there in 2014. In 2010, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland. From 2012 to 2017, he worked as a research assistant on the Jazzomat project at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar. He has been with the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT) since 2008, where he was appointed Senior Scientist in 2021. As part of his ongoing habilitation, he served as a postdoc from 2021 to 2025 in the Semantic Audio Processing Group at the International Audio Laboratories in Erlangen.
His research interests include AI-supported audio and music processing and their application in the field of digital humanities.
The main application areas of his research are music information retrieval, detection and classification of acoustic scenes and events (DCASE), soundscape research, bioacoustics and ecoacoustics, and computational auditory scene analysis (CASA).
