Setting Up a Student Email Account in Thunderbird (M365 Email System)

Important Note:

To set up an email account, you must have a valid user account (BA number + corresponding password).

Adding an Email Account

Attention!

A new account management feature was introduced in Thunderbird version 142. To add mailboxes, you must disable account management again.

Open Thunderbird's Settings, scroll down to the General section, locate the Account Management (EXPERIMENTAL) section, and uncheck the box next to Create accounts using the new account manager.

If you haven't set up an email account in Thunderbird yet, the welcome window will appear. This window gives you the option to set up an existing email address. Enter your name, email address, and password here, and then select Set Up Manually in the lower-left corner. The additional setup options will now open.

If the welcome window does not appear, or if you want to add another existing account, you can navigate to the setup window by selecting File – New – Existing Email Account....

In the setup window, first enter your name, email address, and the password associated with your personal BA number. If you want to avoid having to log in each time, you can save your password. Now click Set up manually.

Figure 1 illustrates the process described above, and the button for manual setup is highlighted.

Enter the following information:

  • Incoming mail server:
    • IMAP
    • Server-Adress: outlook.office365.com
    • Port: 993
    • SSL: SSL/TLS
    • Authentication: OAuth2
    • Username: vorname.nachname@stud.uni-bamberg.de
  • Outgoing Mail Server:
    • Server-Adress: smtp.office365.com
    • Port: 587
    • SSL: STARTTLS
    • Authentication: OAuth2
    • Username: vorname.nachname@stud.uni-bamberg.de

When you click Done, the Shibboleth login window will open. Enter your BA number and the corresponding password here. Check the box next to Log in only to this service. Click Login.

Figure 2 shows the Shibboleth login window.

After a moment, you will be redirected to the Microsoft website. There, you must accept the requested permissions by clicking Continue.
