GitLab - Manage and version control software projects

What is GitLab?

GitLab is an open-source web application for managing file versions. Using this system can support teamwork, for example, in software development projects by students within a course, or when writing research reports for a research project, etc., or simply for version control of a research paper, a research report, or a doctoral dissertation.

GitLab is particularly well-suited for any content that exists as plain text files (such as program code, XML, CSV, YAML, LaTeX, etc.). However, it can also be used to capture, archive, and version control more unstructured data from any research project—for example, to meet requirements for data traceability and integrity.

Beyond basic features such as version control, GitLab offers additional features that may be of interest in the context of software development. Some of these features can also be put to good use even outside the context of software development. The management of to-do lists and tasks, in particular, has proven to be especially useful.

In addition, you can record and track the progress and challenges of your projects, or store your documentation in a wiki.

In GitLab, you can assign tiered permissions—ranging from read-only access to user management. This is all managed through a self-service interface.

Who can use GitLab?

1. University Facilities

  • The University of Bamberg provides a central, general-purpose GitLab service at  https://gitlab.rz.uni-bamberg.de
  • Any university department can use this system and manage its own access permissions within its respective area.
  • If you work at a department or unit at the University of Bamberg and do not yet have access to your own account, please send an email on behalf of your department or unit to the IT Research and Project Support Department within IT Services at the following address: it-fopro(at)uni-bamberg.de.

2. Students

A GitLab service specifically designed for flexible and independent work related to academic studies is available to students at https://gitlab.studium.uni-bamberg.de. This service can be used directly on a self-service basis without the need for additional activation.
