General Information About User Accounts

Who is eligible for a user account?

All individuals who have an affiliation with the university as defined in the Terms of Use will be provided with a user account to access IT services.

This user account is available to the following groups of people (either automatically or upon request) for the duration of their affiliation with the university:

The User Lifecyle determines the duration of use differently depending on the user group.

The user account: username and password

A user account is created in the central user database for all authorized individuals. Users log in to the data services using the username and password associated with their user account.

At the University of Bamberg, the term BA-Number is very commonly used for the username, as it always begins with the prefix “ba”.

Each time you log in, the system uses your username (BA number) to identify you and your password to verify that it is actually you. Based on the permissions stored in your user account, the system will then either grant or deny you access. Your personal user account is non-transferable.

Nearly all information and communication services verify identity and access rights using the central user database in the IT Service (Active Directory, AD). This means you must use the same username and password whenever you log in. The exceptions to this are logging in to service computers running Windows 7 and the library’s circulation system. These each use their own user databases.

If you do not have a user account and only need temporary access to the university network—for example, as a guest for the duration of a training session or for a short transitional period IT-Support can create a non-personalized, temporary user account for you.
