File Server (Network Drive)

The University of Bamberg's IT Service operates file servers where both staff and students can store files for personal use and for sharing within workgroups.

You can use your computer to connect to a network drive that is available to you on the file server (for which you have access permissions).

Files that you save on the file server, ...

• you can access it at any time from any computer within the university's network.
• you can access it at any time from any computer outside the university's network via the Internet using a VPN connection.
• they can also be used by a team, with multiple users granted access to the same network drive and logging in with their own user credentials (BA number and corresponding password).
• are backed up daily and can be restored if, for example, you accidentally delete them.
• are much better protected against “real” and “virtual” break-ins and theft than if you stored them on your computer in your home office.

In addition, the central servers are designed with technical redundancy, so that the failure of individual components (power supplies, hard drives) does not result in disruptions that users would notice. Uninterruptible power supplies can bridge power outages and protect against damage caused by power surges, which can occur during thunderstorms, for example. A special maintenance agreement is in place for the central servers, ensuring that necessary repairs are carried out much more quickly than is possible for personal computers.
