Data Backup and Recovery

The IT Department regularly backs up the data stored on its servers. This is typically done during periods of low system load, that is, sometime during the night.

Provided that the backups run without any problems, we can restore user data if necessary. Typically, this involves files on network drives or emails in the IT Service's mailboxes.

Files that are open at the time of the backup or that were not closed properly may not be backed up under certain circumstances. In addition, the data must have already been present on the IT Service’s systems at least once prior to a backup in order to be included in the backup. The IT Service therefore cannot guarantee that all of a user’s files have been backed up without exception.

Restores can only be initiated by users who have access rights to the relevant resource. Restores are generally limited to the original scope of access; for example, files are restored back to the network drive where they were previously located.

If you would like to recover data, please contact us (by email at Server Infrastructure Department). Please provide us with as much information as possible about the missing data:

  • What data are we talking about (file names, email subject lines)?
  • Where exactly was the data located (directory paths, subfolders in the mailbox)?
  • When was the data accidentally deleted, or when was the last time the data was known to be intact?
