Name server

What are name servers?

Name servers provide name resolution. This is a process by which the names of computers or services are resolved into an address that a computer can process.
Example: The name vc.uni-bamberg.de is resolved to 141.13.240.125.

The University of Bamberg's IT department operates two name servers:

  • The PRIMARY name server has the following IP address:
    141.13.240.33
  • The SECONDARY name server has the following IP address:
    141.13.240.2

Another external SECONDARY nameserver: ws-han1.win-ip.dfn.de.

The How to Enter DNS Servers guide explains how to enter DNS servers in Windows.

IP Addresses and Name Servers

Servers, PCs used as servers, and network printers must be assigned static IP addresses.

Please note: As a general rule, individual PCs on the university's network are not assigned static IP addresses. PCs connected to the network are dynamically assigned an IP address when they are turned on. They must be configured for the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
