ORCID is an independent, nonprofit organisation that provides researchers worldwide, across all disciplines, with a unique, persistent identifier—an ORCID iD. This Open Researcher and Contributor iD distinguishes you from other researchers and permanently and uniquely links your research outputs and activities to your iD.

The University of Bamberg is a member of ORCID. The university administration encourages researchers at the university to create an ORCID and link their research activities to it. It recommends that researchers list the University of Bamberg as a “trusted party” in their ORCID profile and authorise the University Library to maintain their affiliation with the university and the assignment of research activities in their ORCID profiles.

ORCID in a nutshell (Video, 4:17 mins)

ORCID stands for “Open Researcher & Contributor iD”. With this ORCID iD, researchers are uniquely linked to their research activities and results, even in cases where there are people with the same name or different spellings. Anyone who creates an ORCID record is in complete control over what information is recorded and who can view it. Only the ID is always public. Creating an ORCID record is free of charge.

An ORCID iD consists of 16 digits, displayed in groups of four, with the last digit being a check digit. As part of an ORCID web address, it links to a person’s ORCID profile, where further data can be stored permanently and independently of any institution.

ORCID is used internationally by publishers and organisations in the academic sector and is already integrated into many journals and major systems such as Web of Science,CrossRef and BASE. ORCID is jointly supported by an independent non-profit organisation and has become the standard for identifying academic authors.

The University of Bamberg has been an ORCID member since 2019 and supports the use of ORCID iDs, for example in the Current Research Information System (FIS) or in the open-access journals published by the University of Bamberg Press. Within the university, the University Library is responsible for all matters relating to ORCID.

Information on data protection in relation to ORCID can be found in the data protection report commissioned by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The benefits of an ORCID iD are: 

  • Unambiguous identification of individuals, even in cases of identical names, name changes or different spellings, without restriction to specific disciplines or institutions
  • Unambiguous linking of biographical details to individual research outputs, such as publications, research data, projects and software.
  • The ability to automatically maintain lists of publications
  • Privacy and data protection
  • Simplified communication with funding bodies, professional societies, publishers and repositories (e.g. when submitting applications for third-party funding and manuscripts, or registering for conferences) or via single sign-on authentication (see also “Using your ORCID iD”)
  • Simplified documentation of the overall research output of universities, faculties, institutes and academic groups

Please follow these steps:

  • You can apply for an ORCID iD free of charge via https://orcid.org/register.
  • When doing so, please include as many spellings and variations of your name as possible (e.g. maiden name, additional first names, umlauts without diacritical marks).
  • Please use the standardised university name “Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg”. If you wish, you can enter the previous stages of your academic career.
  • Set up access permissions for ‘Trusted Parties’ (instructions) to ensure your ORCID profile is continuously updated with new information from these sources (instructions):
    • Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg or University of Bamberg
    • DOI agencies CrossRef and DataCite
    • Open Access search engine BASE

All profile details are optional and can be managed to control their visibility. We recommend that you keep your profile open.

Please register with ORCID only once. If you have forgotten your ORCID iD, you can look it up here.

We recommend using your ORCID iD as followes: 

  • Always include your ORCID iD when submitting articles, on publications, on published research data and in project proposals.
  • Include your ORCID iD on your own website and in your email signature. This makes it easier to find your publications and increases the visibility of your research.
  • Link your ORCID iD to the Current Research Information System FIS.
  • Regarding your ORCID login via Shibboleth: If you have registered your @uni-bamberg.de email address in your ORCID account, select “Sign in through your institution” and “University of Bamberg” on the ORCID login page.
  • Registering with ORCID can enable you to use single sign-on authentication on various platforms and journals, such as PLOS, Sciencematters and some research data repositories, thereby saving you from having to create additional accounts.

Linking your ORCID iD to the Current Research Information System (FIS)

 

Link your ORCID iD to the FIS to ensure the two systems are fully integrated:

ORCID is integrated into the Current Research Information System (FIS) at University of Bamberg. Once the linking is complete, the ORCID icon will be displayed on your profile and alongside your various research activities in the FIS. If you have not yet linked your ORCID iD to the FIS, the green iD icon will not be visible.

  • Under “My FIS”, in the ORCID section, you will find the ‘Link to ORCID’ button. Clicking this will automatically redirect you to the ORCID login page.
  • Log in via ‘Sign in through your institution’ and, in the next step, select ‘University of Bamberg’.
  • If required, transfer your details via the “Digital ID Card” and confirm the information.
  • Once you have logged in successfully, the system will automatically take you to your FIS profile.
  • The successful linking of your ORCID iD will then be visible under “My FIS” in the ORCID section.
  • Once the link has been successfully established, you should “Edit ORCID settings”. FIS data can be synchronised with your ORCID profile either manually or automatically (see also ORCID settings and permissions in FIS).
  • Your ORCID iD will now be displayed in your FIS profile.

Once the linking has been completed, you must configure certain settings or grant authorisations in the FIS.

By creating this link, you grant the FIS the following authorisations:

  • View your ORCID iD
  • View your settings regarding "trusted parties" and your visibility
  • Add/update your research activities
  • Add/update information on your profile

You can use the ORCID settings to decide which data should be transferred to your ORCID profile. You can also select a synchronisation mode: by choosing “Automatic”, the system will send the data regularly and automatically, usually once a day. By choosing “Manual”, you will need to send the entries in the queue to ORCID manually.
