Online-Lecture: "Destination UK? Routes into the British university system for German researchers" (21.02.2024, 12:00 - 13:30)

Online-Lecture: "Destination UK? Routes into the British university system for German researchers" (21.02.2024, 12:00 - 13:30)

Even after Brexit, the UK remains one of the world’s research powerhouses, punching well above its political and economic weight. Ranking fourth in the world in citable research outputs – behind only China, the US, and (from 2022) India – and still arguably home to a great proportion of top-ranked institutions than any country outside of North America, it remains a very attractive destination for visiting researchers. The UK’s continued involvement in Horizon Europe from January 2024 onwards will, among many other things, help maintain its status as one of Germany’s most important international academic partners.

In this seminar, Dr Robert Craig will give an overview of UK Higher Education and routes into it for early-career researchers. He will outline the bureaucratic requirements post-Brexit, before summarizing some of the funding possibilities available for visiting researchers. Finally, he will turn to university culture itself: how best to build an excellent relationship with potential mentors or collaborators; what to expect (and not) when there; and the kinds of intercultural challenges and pitfalls to watch out for.

Date & time: 21.02.2024, 12:00 - 13:30

Location: online

Lecturer:  Dr Robert Craig

Having studied, researched, taught, and completed his PhD in German Literature & Culture at the University of Cambridge (2016), he has published and spoken widely, particularly on German literature and philosophy. He has held studentships and scholarships from Cambridge, the UK Arts & Humanities Research Council, and the DAAD; and he is a cofounder and the current coordinator of the University of the Bamberg’s ‘Forschungsnetzwerk’.
