Johann von Spix Professorship

The Johann von Spix Professorship is held by international visiting professors at the University for the duration of their stay. The professorship is financed by special funds from the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Science and the Arts.

It is named after the curator Johann Baptist Spix, who studied philosophy at the Universitas Ottoniano-Fridericiana, the forerunner of today’s University of Bamberg, from 1799 onwards and also received his doctorate there. He was later ennobled and knighted for his achievements in international research expeditions. The Franconian Humboldt, as Spix is also known, has been the eponym of the International Visiting Professorship since summer semester 2015.
