Smart City Research Lab

The Smart City Research Lab (SCRL) is an interdisciplinary research network at the University of Bamberg, funded through the Smart City Bamberg model project. As part of the federal programme “Model Projects Smart Cities”, the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB, formerly BMI) provides a total of €15.75 million in funding to the City of Bamberg until 2027. The SCRL supported the City of Bamberg in developing a strategy for the digital transformation of the city and has been supporting its implementation since 2023.

The SCRL is closely connected to all existing research groups within the ZIAI and therefore fulfils a cross-cutting role across the institute. Research projects from the individual research groups can be carried out within the SCRL and may also receive funding. For example, researchers investigate questions related to cognition and interaction in the context of sharing private mobility information, citizen participation as a socio-technical challenge, and Digital Heritage in the context of the thematic cluster “Digital Twin World Heritage”.

Currently, around 100 researchers are actively involved in the SCRL, some of whom are also members of the ZIAI.
