Stephen Elliott (1771-1830)
Biographie:
Stephen Elliott wurde 1771 in Beaufort, South Carolina geboren. Nach einem Studium der Rechte an der Yale Universität (Connecticut) kehrte er 1791 nach South Carolina zurück, wo er zunächst als Pflanzer tätig wurde. Ab ca. 1793 verfolgte er eine politische Karriere in der Legislative, von der er sich 1800 zurückzog, um sich vermehrt seiner Farm und der Botanik zu widmen. 1812 übernahm er das Amt des Präsidenten der ersten Staatsbank von South Carolina, das er bis zu seinem Tod 1830 beibehielt. Bekannt wurde er durch sein botanisches Werk "A Sketch of the Botany of South-Carolina and Georgia", das zwischen 1816 und 1824 erschien. Mit Mühlenberg korrespondierte er von 1808 bis 1815.
