Setting Up a Workspace for Remote Work
Work-from-home setup
You can use your work laptop for remote work just as you normally would.
In addition, based on an approved telework agreement, the university may also provide a docking station, a monitor, and a keyboard and mouse.
The university does not provide a separate printer or scanner for telework! Internet access (DSL connection) is also not funded by the university.
If you do not have access to a laptop at times, you can borrow one from IT Services. Please send us an email with your name and BA number, along with a brief explanation, to it-support(at)uni-bamberg.de, or in urgent cases, call us at +49 951 863-1333.
Communication and Files at the Home Telework Station
If you are working from home, you will need a VPN connection to the university network for nearly all functions. For instructions on how to set up VPN, see the
Gudie to Setting Up and Using VPN.
If you're using a computer that's centrally managed by the IT department, VPN is already set up using the built-in tools.
Employees of the Central University Administration are provided with a VPN hardware box that ensures permanent VPN access to the administrative network.
If you use the network drives (file servers) provided by the IT department at your institution, you will also need a VPN connection at your home remote workstation. If you are using a computer that is centrally managed by the IT department, your personal and work-related network drives should be available to you in File Explorer (File Manager). They will be mounted automatically.
For information on how to map your personal and task-related network drives, please visit our help page in the section Network Drives (File Servers).
To ensure that your colleagues and students can reach you even when you're working from home, you should activate your office voicemail. You can do this from your home office using the telephony web client: Enable or Set Up Call Forwarding.
Please note: If you want to set up call forwarding to your personal phone, you may first need to request this feature via the IAM portal. In this case, you could initially ask callers, via your voicemail greeting, to send you an email.
You can find all the information about call forwarding and voicemail on the Voice mail machine page.
For more information about the phone, see the Telefony page.
You can easily access your personal and work-related mailboxes. If you are using a computer at a remote workstation with the standard University of Bamberg installation, you should be able to manage emails in your personal and work-related mailboxes as usual using Outlook. Otherwise, simply go to mailex.uni-bamberg.de and log in with your user account.
You can find instructions for setting up your personal and task-specific mailboxes at the following links:
- Instructions for setting up your email account
- Instructions for setting up a task-based email account
Employees of the Central University Administration can also use Outlook for email as usual while working remotely.
With Zoom or Microsoft Teams, you can make voice and video calls over the Internet and send text messages. That’s why these programs are well-suited for meetings and collaborative work within a team when all or many team members are working remotely.
Screen sharing is possible on both systems.
For information on installing and using these programs, visit the Zoom page or the Microsoft Teams: Working as a Team Online.
