SAS qualification goals

The master of science program "Strategy & Sustainability" leads to a degree that qualifies students both for practical jobs in organizations and for academic jobs in universities and other scholarly research institutions.

It aims at

  • developing students' ability to analyse managerial problems and challenges 
  • in companies and other organizations
  • with a focus on strategic decision making
  • and on the sustainability of organizational activities 
  • using scientific methods
  • and developing innovative solutions.

This ability should allow graduates to use their profound knowledge both in a context of companies and not-for-profit organizations as well as for their own academic research career, for example in the form of a doctoral project (Ph.D.).

Moreover, the SAS program also develops the ability to understand cross-disciplinary and cross-functional challenges using strategic analyses and concepts of sustainable management. 


Academic skills

Students who have succesfully completed the M.Sc. program SAS,

  • are able to compare core models and theories from the three main module groups Strategy, Sustainability, as well as Digitalisation-People-Culture and they have characterized at least one of them in an essay during their SAS studies;
  • have developed profound and integrated managerial knowledge from the three module groups Strategy, Sustainability, as well as Digitalisation-People-Culture, and from the module group Research; this knowledges allows them to understand new academic problems and tasks regarding their link with strategic management and sustainability management and to evaluate them with a critical mindset (for example based on the modules: Corporate Strategy and Growth, Strategic Renewal and Transformation, Sustainability Accounting and Reporting, or Organizational Crisis Management);
  • have developed the competency to analyse and understand complex scholarly problems, based on theory and from different perspectives, as they have shown through their contributions to seminars;  
  • have shown through their final thesis (master's thesis) that they are able to conduct a research project following the standards of good academic practice; in their thesis they have applied the knowledge they have acquired through the SAS program and have used a specific research method to answer a specific research question, thus making their own contribution tothe field of business administration / strategy / sustainability;
  • are able to select complex qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g., from experiments, surveys, or observations) to answer research questions, to adapt them to the specific research context, and to use them efficiently.
  • are able to develop own ideas and to critically evaluate their implementation as they have learned through individual and group essays and presentations throughout the SAS program.

Ability to pursue a qualified professional activity

Students who have succesfully completed the M.Sc. program SAS,

  • have developed the ability to find solutions for complex and new questions of strategic management, taking into account the requirements of current sustainability regulations and thinking;
  • they are able to apply their knowledge in a concrete professional context as they have learned to do in modules within, for example, the module group strategic management;  
  • they know how to use their theoretical knowledge as well as management instruments they have discovered during their studies when facing specific situations with specific challenges to create their own idiosyncratic solutions, as they have learned to do while working successfully on the topic of their masters thesis.

Personal development

Students who have succesfully completed the M.Sc. program SAS,

  • have shown in group work that they are able to reflect critically on models and theories and to develop a convincing line of arguments to explain a topic to a specified target audience while taking into account the perspectives of others;
  • have shown in group work that they are able to take decisions, set priorities and distribute tasks; in this context, they take responsibilities for themselves and their task within the group;
  • have developed a personal perspective regarding professional activities, know their abilities and skills (subject, method, and social skills) and have concrete ideas how to further develop them; they are able to identify the current state-of-the-art in a research stream through their own analysis of the relevant literature;
  • critically analyse the societal background of companies and their strategic decisions, for example based on the module "Sustainability and responsibility in management", they are able to explain their importance for the presence and they are equipped to take an active role in societal processes by following democratic principles;
  • are prepared to take responsibilities based on the professional values that guide their activity or profession and they are able to conduct their own analysis leading to an optimization of processes within their company and the market it operates in by including both a strategic perspective and a sustainability perspective; for this purpose they use theoretical and methodological knowledge and are able to realistically evaluate their own skills;
  • do not evaluate alternative courses of action for their company / organization based exclusively on the criterion of short-term profit maximization, but also regarding long-term effects and unintended collateral effects when preparing decisions.
