Dieses Handbuch bietet Studierenden, Lehrenden und Forschenden eine kompakte Einführung in aktuelle wissenschaftliche Debatten zum amerikanischen Roman des 19. Jahrhunderts. Teil I liefert einen Überblick über zentrale historische und ideengeschichtliche Rahmenbedingungen wie die Debatten um die Abschaffung der Sklaverei, die aufkommende Umweltbewegung, der Wandel der Printkultur, Transnationalismus, Sentimentalismus, Realismus und Naturalismus. In Teil II werden 25 der bedeutendsten amerikanischen Romane des 19. Jahrhunderts in eigenständigen Aufsätzen diskutiert. Die Romane werden dabei jeweils 1) in ihre spezifischen kulturhistorischen Kontexte eingebettet, 2) auf ihre sprachlichen und stilistischen Merkmale hin untersucht, und 3) mithilfe relevanter theoretischer Ansätze in Auszügen analysiert.
