Laura Demeter studierte Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte und Romanistik (Italienisch) an der Universität Bukarest und der Ruhr-Universität in Bochum, bevor sie den internationalen UNESCO-Masterstudiengang für Weltkulturerbeschutz an der Technischen Universität Brandenburg in Cottbus absolvierte. Hier interessierte sie sich besonders dafür, wie mit dem kulturellen Erbe der kommunistischen Regime nach 1989 in Mittel- und Osteuropa umgegangen wurde. In ihrer Dissertation an der IMT School for Advanced Studies in Lucca, Italien (2017) mit dem Titel ‘Picking up the Pieces from the Communist Past: Transitional Heritage after 1989 in Germany and Romania’ untersuchte sie Themen wie: Prozesse zu ‘Heritage-Making‘, Wertediskurse und ‘Transitional Heritage‘ im Kontext autoritärer Regime und Regimewechsel.

Laura ist eine internationale Wissenschaftlerin mit Erfahrung in verschiedenen nationalen Kontexten wie Deutschland, Italien, Schweden, Großbritannien und Rumänien. Sie verfügt über eine langjährige internationale Forschungserfahrung, unter anderem forschte sie als Postdoktorandin am Leibniz-Institut für Geschichte und Kultur in Osteuropa (GWZO) in Leipzig (2019-2020). Sie war als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an internationalen Forschungsprojekten, wie dem Horizon 2020 EU-Projekt Reflective Societies: ‘COURAGE. Kulturelle Opposition: Das kulturelle Erbe von Dissens in den ehemaligen sozialistischen Ländern verstehen‘, am Leibniz-Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropastudien in Regensburg (2017-2019) beteiligt. Als Postdoktorandin an der Universität Bukarest hat sie sich mit Menschenrechtsfragen und Praktiken des ‘Heritage-Making‘, und Kulturerbeschutz und der Zerstörung in (post-) sozialistischen Kontexten, wie zum Beispiel dem kommunistischen Rumänien, befassen können. Im Rahmen der Lehre an der Universität Bologna konzentrierte sie sich auf Fragen des Schutzes des kulturellen Erbes im internationalen Vergleich und die Rolle der internationalen Organisationen.

Seit 2021 ist sie tätig als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am KDWT in Bamberg, im Rahmen des interdisziplinären Forschungskonsortiums UrbanMetaMapping (Kartierung und Transformation: Eine interdisziplinäre Analyse von Stadtplänen als visuelles Medium der städtischen Transformation in Mittel- und Osteuropa, 1939–1949) unter der Leitung von Dr.-Ing. Carmen Enss.

Seit 2014 ist sie als externe Expertin bei der Europäischen Kommission (Marie Sklodowska-Curie, EACEA-Programm und COST-Aktion) und dem Europäischen Institut für Kulturrouten zuständig für die Evaluierung von Kultur- und Forschungsprojekten.

  • Kritische Diskurse zum kulturellen Erbe
  • Kulturelles Erbe des 20. Jahrhunderts in Mittel- und Osteuropa. Diskurse und Strategien zum Erhalt und Schutz
  • Internationale Organisationen (UNESCO, ICOMOS) und normative Rahmenbedingungen für den Schutz des kulturellen Erbes
  • Menschenrechte, Aktivismus und Zerstörung des kulturellen Erbes unter autoritären Regime
