Incoming Fellowship for Female Early-Career Researchers

Members of the University of Bamberg who are eligible to supervise doctoral students may apply for a incoming fellwoship for international female early-career researchers to realise a visiting stay at the University of Bamberg for a period ending no later than 31 December 2027. Applications and the stay can be undertaken during the final phase of the master's degree programme or doctoral studies. The visiting stays are intended for

  • prospective doctoral candidates in order to develop a potential PhD project and to enable both parties (the doctoral candidate and the potential supervisor) to assess whether their research interests, supervision requirements and the working environment preferences align (maximum stay of 4 weeks)
  • advanced-stage doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers in order to prepare a Humboldt research grant application (4 to 8 weeks)

International applicants are defined as women who have their primary residence abroad and/or who did not earn their master’s or doctoral degree in Germany (nationality is irrelevant).

Amount of Funding

  • 4,000 EUR as a lump-sum grant for a one-month visiting stay by an international prospective doctoral candidate
  • 5,000 EUR per month as a lump-sum grant for a one- to two-month visiting stay by an international PhD students at an advanced stage or postdoctoral researcher to prepare a Humboldt research grant application

Selection Criteria

  • Quality of the connection to University of Bamberg institutions, contexts, and research focus areas
  • For prospective doctoral candidates: An excellent completed or pending university degree and the quality of academic performance to date; the quality and potential of the proposed doctoral research project
  • For advanced-stage doctoral candidates and postdocs: Fulfilment or foreseeable fulfilment of the formal criteria for applying for a Humboldt Research Fellowship; likelihood of a successful application
  • A plausible explanation as to why a temporary guest visa is envisaged for the initial stages of the process rather than regular employment
  • The invited person must not have been in Germany at the time of the invitation.
    A stay extending beyond the maximum funding period and financed by personal or other third-party funds is of course possible.
  • No other funding (e.g., DAAD, ERASMUS) has been or will be used for the stay.

Eligible Applicants

Members of the University of Bamberg eligible to confer doctoral degrees (typically tenured professors).

Required Application Information and Documents

Please submit your application for a fellowship to initiate doctoral studies or to prepare a Humboldt application, compiled into a single PDF file, to the Vice President for Diversity and International Affairs, Prof. Dr. Sabine Vogt, via Dr. Marion Hacke, marion.hacke@uni-bamberg.de.

Application documents:

  1. An informal application from the host (usually a tenured professor), co-authored and co-signed by the applicant, containing the following information:
    • The applicant’s first and last name
    • Email address (used for contact purposes; please ensure you provide a valid email address)
    • Mailing address
    • Date of birth
    • Country of origin
    • Date and final mark of the compelted degree and (for postdocs) the doctorate, or, if the degree has not yet been completed, the expected date of completion and the current status of the degree programme or doctoral process
    • Planned period of the stay
    • Host: First and last name, email address
    • Written statements regarding the following aspects:
      • What potential connections exist between the applicant and the host or the host’s institution? (max. 1,500 characters)
      • In what ways do your research interests align? (max. 1,500 characters)
      • What objectives and activities are planned for the visit? (max. 1,500 characters)
      • How do you envision collaborating with the host institution following the funding period? (max. 1,500 characters)
  2. A scan of the degree certificate (for prospective doctoral candidates) or the doctoral certificate (for postdocs) or, if the relevant degree has yet to be completed, a current transcript of records and confirmation of the expected date of graduation. When preparing a Humboldt application, the confirmation must state that the doctoral degree is expected to be completed prior to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's scheduled selection meeting.
  3. Letter of recommendation from the applicant’s home institution in accordance to the template (286.9 KB, 1 page)
