What are the Next Steps?
When your application has been received, the International Office checks your documents for completeness as well as the academic and German language proficiency requirements.
Online Notifications
- Non-Restricted Courses of Study, German Course for Study Purposes & Studienkolleg: If all criteria are fulfilled, you will receive your letter of admission directly in the application portal after the review.
- Courses of Study with Admissions Restrictions (‘Numerus Clausus’):
The admissions procedure will not start until the application deadline has passed. Letters of admission and letters of rejection are therefore issued from the end of January/beginning of February (summer semester) or the end of July/beginning of August (winter semester) at the earliest.
Notifications of Rejection: These are issued continuously during the application period if admission requirements are not fulfilled.
Enrolment (Student Registration)
Enrolment is compulsory after receiving your letter of admission.
Studienkolleg München: Enrolment is not at the University of Bamberg but at one of the universities in Munich (LMU or TUM), depending on your course.
University of Bamberg: Enrolment is done in two steps.
- Transfer the semester contribution fees: This must be done before you send your enrolment documents.
- Send documents by post: Enrolment is only possible by post to the Studierendenkanzlei, Kapuzinerstraße 25, 96047 Bamberg.
Health Insurance Certificate
- To enrol at the University of Bamberg, a health insurance certificate from a statutory German health insurance company, or (in case of private insurance) a certificate exempting the student from German health insurance requirements, is required. The insurance status is sent digitally to the Enrolment Office.

Required Documents for Enrolment
Download the Application for Enrolment (Antrag auf Immatrikulation) from the application portal, sign it, and enclose the following:
Normal photocopy required
- Bank statement or account activity transaction slip of the remittance of semester contribution fees
- Your letter of admission from the International Office
- Passport/identity card: Only the data including name & date of birth (translation required if data are not in German or English)
- If you studied at a German university: Study certificates of all semesters
- Translations: Documents in English do not require a translation. Documents in all other languages must be translated officially (list of officially authorised translators in Germany).
- School leaving certificate: Certificate and list of school leaving grades
- Studies abroad: University entrance examination (if applicable), lists of grades for all semesters and university degree certificate (e.g. Bachelor’s certificate)
- Proof of Germanproficiency: A simple copy is sufficient if verifiable online.
- Pre-university examination (FSP) from a Studienkolleg (if taken): Certificate of passing the pre-university examination, including the individual grades
- Change of name: Proof of change-of-name if the name on the certificates differs (e.g. marriage certificate)
- APS Certificate: For China, India, Vietnam (original or copy verifiable online). Additionally: Simple copy of TestAS if stated in the APS certificate.
Officially certified copies of original documents & translations:

Requirements for officially certified copies (Amtliche Beglaubigungen)
Documents must bear a certification statement, an official seal, and the signature of the certifying body.
- Recognised: Municipal administrations, notary offices, embassies/consulates
- Not recognised: Lawyers, student institutions, savings banks (Sparkassen), health insurance companies, churches, translators (for originals)
Important: For multi-page documents, the continuity of the pages of the document must be ensured either by cross-stamping of the fanned out pages (Überstempelung) or by certifying each page individually.
Check List for Arrival
Ideally, plan your arrival during the week, as the university and public offices are closed on a weekend and on public holidays. It is advisable to allow a few extra days for finding accommodation and dealing with the authorities.
To bring:
- Letter of admission
- Passport/identity card
- All originals of your university entry qualification & proof of German language knowledge
To do:
- Accommodation: Sign your rental agreement and make an appointment for getting your key.
- Formalities: Take care of your health insurance and finalise your enrolment.
- Authorities: Citizen Registration Office (Einwohneramt)/Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde): register your address and - if necessary - apply for a Residence Permit (Aufenthaltstitel)
- Finances: Open a bank account (important for rent and insurance).
Studies: Plan your studies and select your courses.
