By law, all students in Germany, both German and foreign nationals alike, must carry health insurance. Upon university registration, students must have a health insurance certificate issued or verified by a German health insurance provider.
Students with health insurance in the EU: Before you can enrol at the university, you must submit your foreign insurance documents, e.g. EHIC (+ Letter of Admission), to a statutory health insurance company in Germany via e-mail to have your health insurance accepted.
Students with no health insurance in the EU: Before you can enrol at the university, you must either take out health insurance in Germany, or have your foreign health insurance company accepted by a German statutory health insurance company by sending your insurance documents (+ Letter of Admission) to a German health insurance company via e-mail (see list of Convention States).
Students from the UK: Before you can enrol at the university, you must apply for a GHIC on the website of the NHS and submit it a copy of the GHIC (+ Letter of Admission) to a statutory health insurance company to have your health insurance accepted.
Students over the age of 30: If you are 30 years of age or older, you are not required to provide a confirmation of health insurance for enrolment. However, we very strongly recommend insuring yourself with a (private) health insurance company.
You can find detailed information about this here.
Please read the section "Health Insurance" on our website carefully before sending your proof of insurance (+ Letter of Admission) to one of the following German health insurance companies via e-mail:
