Why is foreign language teaching still necessary in the age of AI? How is language learning changing? What opportunities do digital technologies such as AI and VR offer for foreign language teaching? What additional digital language skills are necessary in the context of AI and similar technologies?

Theresa Summer answers these and other questions in the lernen:digital Masterclass (published in April 2026).

On January 27, 2026, Michelle Zirkel and Claudia Schnellbögl were guests at a webinar hosted by AR2VR. There, they shared their experiences working with the AR2VR authoring tool with 70 foreign language teachers from Taiwan as part of teacher training sessions for the project “VR and ESD in ELT ” under the DiSo-SGW initiative. They provided recommendations on how teachers can learn to use the AR2VR tool and apply it effectively for Education for Sustainable Development in foreign language instruction. As part of a live guided tour, they also offered insights into a learning environment developed with AR2VR, the Bamberg Sustainability Tour (Zirkel, 2025). In this tour, learners explore various sustainability-related locations in Bamberg. The blog post also showcases many other VR projects that were created as part of our university seminars and teacher training programs.

In this blog post, the company AR2VR discusses the VR Storyworld Approach (Summer & Flämig, 2025), an approach to English language instruction that combines picture books with virtual reality (VR) in the context of Global Citizenship Education. For this post, the two authors developed sample VR storyworlds using the AR2VR authoring tool. This allows learners to immerse themselves in literary storyworlds before engaging intensively and critically with the picture books. The blog post also features a video of the developed VR storyworlds.

In January 2024, the ARD film crew followed our student Selina Maria Arendt. She is studying to become a teacher (Realschule) and was in the middle of taking her final exam in EWS at the time as well as completing her internship at the Realschule in Scheßlitz.

Even though the exam is a bit stressful: studying to become a teacher is great and prepares you well for the job! The Chair of English Language Education goes above and beyond to provide excellent support to its students during their internship. Many thanks to Selina Arendt, lecturer Nicole Gumbrecht, and internship supervisor Sabrina Haberzettel for the interesting insights!
