With over 22,000 employees, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the largest organization for applied research in Europe and currently operates 66 Fraunhofer institutes and independent research units. Fraunhofer IIS / Fraunhofer SCS

The chair is closely linked to the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS. The institute is a research center and partner of the industry in the fields of microelectronic systems and software. Clients are firms from industry, service companies and public institutions. The business areas are audio and multimedia, image systems, digital broadcasting, embedded communication systems, IC design, logistics, localization and navigation, medical technology, optical test systems, X-ray technology and sensor technology. More than 750 people are employed at Fraunhofer IIS, and all but less than 25 percent of the budget comes from contract research. The institute is headquartered in Erlangen, with additional locations in Nuremberg, Fürth, Ilmenau and Dresden. Founded in 1985, Fraunhofer IIS is now the largest institute in the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Fraunhofer IIS has become known worldwide for its significant involvement in the development of the mp3 and MPEG AAC audio coding methods. The Fraunhofer Center for Applied Research on Supply Chain Services SCS is also affiliated with the Fraunhofer IIS. Here, more than 50 employees work on topics related to logistics and supply chain management. The focus is on topics such as logistics market analysis, process and network optimization and technology deployment.
