Since 2019 the research project ‘Recording War Damage’, funded by the German Research foundation (DFG), identified and analysed numerous unknown sources, above all city and war damage maps from the 1940s and early 1950s. These findings led to a reassessment of the reconstruction process during and after the Second World War in Europe. A particular attention was dedicated to documentation which captured significant urban transformation processes between the initial war damages and first reconstruction planning processes.

This symposium aims to bring in discussion the results of the interdisciplinary project and to further stimulate and problematize current debates in urban planning.
