// DISSERTATION PROJECT

Integration or Irritation? A Comparative Discourse Analysis of the German Debate about Full-Face-Veil and the German Circumcision Debate

My Dissertation project focuses on two publich debates sharing the same core - the practice of religious traditions by minorities - but also showing very different characteristics: The debate about full-face-veil in 2016/17 and the German Circumcision Debate in 2012. Both topics were discussed vigorously in the respective years. Voices for a ban on male circumcision arose in various agents of the political sector as well as in NGOs and in the domains of science and law. The objection to full face-face-veil was even bigger. To analyse why both discourses were nevertheless very different I will employ the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse. The question, which agents were successful in pushing through their position will be discussed from th perspective of Michel Foucault's power theory. Furthermore, I will analyse if the extent of the objection or if non of these are influencing factors.
