Dr. Chen-Hao Hsu

Chen-Hao Hsu holds a doctoral degree in Sociology from the University of Bamberg (Dr. rer. pol. 2024). He also studied International Business (B.A. 2014) and Sociology (M.A. 2016) at the National Taiwan University. From 2017 to 2019, he worked as a research assistant at the Academia Sinica (Taiwan). From 2019 to 2023, he was a scholarship holder of the DAAD Graduate Study Scholarship Program for his doctoral study at the University of Bamberg. His PhD dissertation “Employment Instability, Family Formation, and Motherhood Penalties: Comparative and Life Course Perspectives” received the Promotionspreis der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg (2024) and won the second place of ECSR Prize for best PhD thesis (2025).

Currently, he works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Professorship of Demography and Health at the University of Bamberg and at the Staatsinstitut für Familienforschung an der Universität Bamberg (ifb). His research interests lie in family demography and labor market sociology. He investigates the socioeconomic causes and consequences of partnerships, childbirths, and parenthood. Using multiple datasets across Europe and Asia, he examines the factors contributing to increasing inequality in work and family behavior in industrialized and developing countries, as well as policy measures aimed at addressing these inequalities.
