Wie in allen Flächenstaaten gibt es auch in Deutschland erhebliche regionale Unterschiede. Im Sommer vor Beginn der Corona-Pandemie hatte der Landkreis Eichstätt mit einer Arbeitslosenquote von 1,25 Prozent praktisch Vollbeschäftigung, während die Stadt Gelsenkirchen mit einer mehr als 10-mal so hohen Quote (13,00 Prozent) erhebliche Probleme am Arbeitsmarkt hat. Der durchschnittliche tägliche Bruttolohn in einer ArbeitnehmerIn in Erlangen war mit 213,29 Euro etwa doppelt so hoch wie der in Wittmund (98,23 Euro). Neben dem oft disskutierten Ost/West-Gefälle gibt es in Deutschland auch erhebliche Unterschiede zwischen Nord und Süd, sowie zwischen Stadt und Land.

Die Forschung der Professur widmet sich der Fage, welche Faktoren die Ungleichheit zwischen und innerhalb von Städten erklären und erarbeitet Politikempfehlungen, wie diese gelindert werden können.
