Welcome to Arabic Studies
مرحبا بكم في قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها
The field of Arabic Studies deals with the language, literature, culture, history, and society of the Arab world from pre-Islamic times to the present.
The focus of the department of Arabic Studies in Bamberg is on modern and contemporary Arab cultural history, taking into account key historical developments in the pre-modern Arab world. Building on its philological roots, the department sees itself first and foremost as a cultural studies discipline that, in addition to the rich Arabic literary and textual tradition, also examines media, theater, film, and popular culture. It analyses these forms and practices in relation to intellectual and societal discourses that shaped them and are, vice versa, shaped by them. Particular attention is given to the media-related and transnational dimensions of Arab cultural and intellectual history as part of an entangled global history of modernity.
Arabic Studies in Bamberg is closely linked with its neighbouring disciplines Islamic Studies, Iranian Studies, Turkology, Jewish Studies and Islamic Art and Archaeology, all together constituting the Institute of Oriental Studies. At the bachelor’s level, courses in Arabic Studies can be taken as part of the joint bachelor degree program ("Islamic Orient"). Specialization in Arabic Studies with an emphasis on comparative and theoretical issues is possible in the accredited master’s program Arabistik/Arabic Studies master's program.
