Renewal (Tajdid) of Islamic Thought in Turkey: The Example of Akabe

This dissertation explores the Akabe Foundation’s approach to tajdīd (renewal) in Islam, with a particular focus on the perspectives developed by Mustafa İslamoğlu. The concept of tajdīd, which refers to the renewal and revival of religious thought and practice, has played a crucial role in Islamic history. The Akabe Foundation positions itself within this tradition by advocating for a Qur’an-centered and reason-guided understanding of Islam, challenging traditional jurisprudential interpretations and sectarian limitations.

The study examines how the Akabe Foundation defines and implements tajdīd in response to contemporary challenges in the Turkish and international Islamic world. It argues that Akabe’s renewalist perspective is neither strictly modernist nor entirely traditionalist but seeks a balance between authenticity and adaptation. By analyzing the writings, publications, and activities of the Akabe Foundation, this research seeks to contribute to the broader discussion on Islamic renewal in Turkey and beyond. The findings will shed light on how tajdīd functions as a dynamic and evolving concept in Islamic thought, particularly in the post-modern era, where religious movements navigate between tradition and transformation.
