Profile of Research

Research in Islamic Art and Archaeology at the University of Bamberg has a particular focus on architecture and architectural decoration in the heartlands of the Islamic World. This is complemented with an interdisciplinary link bridging art history, archaeology and other fields of cultural history regarding several periods and areas of the Islamic ‘middle ages’ and ‘early modern period’. Third-party funding has been acquired for research projects concerning field research in archaeology and architecture, but also research on other problems in Islamic Art and Archaeology.

  • Archaeology of the Islamic periods on the Iberian Peninsula and in the Maghreb
  • Ceramics of the Islamic World

Focus areas in the research of Professor Barbara Finster:

  • Art and Archaeology of the Arabian Peninsula, particularly with regard to Yemen
  • Art of the Early Islamic and Umayyad period in Bilad al-Sham and Iraq
  • Islamic Architecture in Iran
