Project: Virtualisation Lab

Description

Real-world systems are highly virtualised. Application stacks run on virtual servers, scaling is automatic, and the users see none of it. But how is this done? We will build a simple virtual data centre to figure it out.

Participants will familiarise themselves with relevant technologies. This will inform the design decisions to create the virtual data centre. Implementation will be done in group work, with a report and presentations in the end.

Potential topics include

  • file systems (zfs, btrfs, ext4, …)
  • operating systems (Nix(OS), Debian, FreeBSD, …)
  • virtualization (Docker, Podman, LXC, VMs, …)
  • management tools (systemd/SystemV, pyinfra/ansible, restic/borg, …)
  • …
