Winter is Coming: New Compilers Course, Caching Seminar, and Virtualisation Lab
This winter semester, the Systems Programming Chair will offer four modules:
- Our new Systems Programming lecture (SYSNAP-SNAP-B) is all about compiler optimisations. Students will learn how to generate machine-readable code and how to optimise this for non-functional properties such as security, reliability, and energy efficiency. In the end, every student will take on their own optimisation challenge. Systems Programming is for students in their late bachelor programme. It will be taught in English, so ISoSySc students can join to prepare for other master-level courses.
- The familiar Virtualisation lecture (SYSNAP-Virt-M) will be revamped to focus on system-level virtualisation technologies. Based on publications and real-world code examples, students will investigate different architectures of virtual machines and details of their system-level implementation. This course requires good knowledge of systems architecture and operating systems. A self-assessment at the start of the semester will help you evaluate your skills.
- This winter’s seminar (SYSNAP-Seminar-B/M) focuses on caching. In particular, students will get to know the intricacies of caching architectures, mechanisms, and the underlying hardware design. The seminar requires good understanding of systems programming and systems architecture as provided by our modules. It is open to bachelor and master students.
- In our Virtualisation Lab (SYSNAP-Project-B), students will build a little data centre. They will read into topics such as file systems, operating systems, and virtualisation solutions. This will inform the design decisions to create the virtual data centre. Implementation will be done in group work, with a report and presentations in the end. The project is aimed at students in their late bachelor.
Registration for the project ends on 9 October (23:59). For the seminar, you have one more week to join the first session before applying by 16 October (23:59). We would be glad to see you around. Until then, enjoy the rest of the semester break.
