AI perspectives at the “Islamic Medieval Wall Paintings” conference

At the conference “Islamic Medieval Wall Paintings,” Markus Rickert gave an introductory talk and took part in a panel discussion.

The international online conference “Islamic Medieval Wall Paintings: Towards an Interdisciplinary Approach” addressed the study and conservation of medieval Islamic wall paintings on September 4 and 5, 2025. The program combined disciplinary research with discussion of digital methods and their use in cultural heritage research.

Prof. Dr. Markus Rickert was invited to give an introductory contribution and take part in a panel discussion on September 5, in the session on AI, machine learning, and ethical aspects of wall painting research. His talk, “AI Applications in Different Domains: From Production to Agriculture to … Cultural Heritage?”, presented AI applications from manufacturing and agriculture.

He explained how knowledge bases can connect domain expertise with data from different sources. The examples addressed support for planning and decision-making, including how users can examine the information and calculations underlying the results.
