The Ink Guardian Academy
Challenge:
Writing is a fundamental skill that combines cognitive and motor abilities. However, many learners struggle to stay motivated when practicing spelling and handwriting, as traditional exercises are often repetitive and uninspiring. By combining AI-driven storytelling, gamification, and physical writing using the STABILO LUNIS pen, this project explores a novel approach to make writing practice engaging, creative, and meaningful.
Your objective is to explore how STABILO’s LUNIS and AI technology can turn practicing legible handwriting into an engaging experience.

Abstract:
Learning to write is one of the most fundamental skills children acquire in their early years. Yet traditional handwriting practice is often perceived as repetitive, uninspiring, and disconnected from the interests of today's digitally native generation. As a result, many learners struggle to maintain motivation, leading to insufficient practice and suboptimal development of handwriting quality, spelling accuracy, and writing fluency. This project addresses the challenge of making handwriting practice engaging, meaningful, and effective for children aged around 8 to 15 by combining gamification, interactive storytelling, and physical writing through the STABILO LUNIS ink pen.
The core concept of The Ink Guardian Academy is a 2D Jump & Run game in which the STABILO LUNIS pen serves as both game controller and writing instrument. Players navigate levels by rolling the pen to move their character and shaking it to jump. At trigger points within each level, gameplay pauses and a writing challenge is activated — a Quick Time Event in which the player must write a word or complete a task using the pen. The quality of the handwritten input, evaluated across five dimensions — legibility, aesthetics, spelling correctness, pressure, and rhythm — determines the outcome of the challenge and progression within the game. This coupling of writing performance and gameplay consequence ensures that learning is embedded in play rather than treated as a separate exercise.
The game is embedded in an overarching narrative. Players take on the role of Finn, a young fox who must master the art of writing to become a powerful Ink Guardian and defeat the antagonist Malackor, a fallen guardian who devours words from the world. This narrative metaphor — writing equals power — provides intrinsic motivation aligned with the learning objective and supports sustained engagement across multiple worlds and levels.
A functional prototype was developed in Unity using the STABILO LUNIS Kathy SDK, covering one complete level with three writing challenges and a boss fight. The prototype demonstrates the viability of the pen-as-controller concept and serves as the foundation for future evaluation through user studies with the target group. Planned expansion stages include handwriting evaluation by legibility, aesthetics, pressure, and rhythm, an adaptive difficulty system, social features for exchanging handwritten digital letters, a parent mode, and an AI-driven dynamic challenge generator.
