Viatolea Redesign
Challenge:
Changing behavior sustainably is complex, but gamification can help create motivation and positively support behavioral change. This project aims to analyze the user journey of Viatolea from a game designer's perspective and develop a concept for optimizing it.
Develop a gamification concept focusing the current features of the Viatoela app that boost adherence in the first two weeks of use and support dietary change and lasting motivation for using the app.

Abstract:
Viatolea is a mobile app designed to assist users in monitoring their daily dietary consumption and documenting any symptoms that arise post-consumption. Through the examination of this data, the application identifies possible food intolerances and offers tailored insights. To obtain precise outcomes, users are advised to utilize the application consistently for a minimum of 14 days and document all consumed food alongside any associated symptoms.
One of the main issues was keeping users engaged throughout the initial 14-day timeframe. Since meaningful insights cannot be generated immediately, many users lost motivation because they were entering data without receiving any immediate value. The main objective was therefore to improve user engagement and encourage consistent usage throughout this key period. To address this issue, the application was redesigned to enhance its intuitiveness, aesthetic appeal, and user-friendliness. Various gamification elements were also added to incentivize users and enhance participation. A streak mechanism was established to encourage users to consistently record their meals and symptoms, while a scoring system provided additional encouragement for frequent app engagement.
To ensure users received immediate value during the first 14 days, a calorie tracking feature was added. Rather than merely gathering data for subsequent examination, users can track their daily caloric consumption, making the application beneficial from the beginning. This feature encouraged continued engagement while the application gathered sufficient data to identify probable food intolerances. The user interface and overall user experience were also significantly improved. The revised design adheres to contemporary UI/UX standards, making navigation easier and more pleasant. Reminder notifications were incorporated to prompt users to document their meals and symptoms during the day, thereby minimizing the likelihood of overlooking critical information. Furthermore, users now have the capability to modify previously logged meals and symptoms, enabling them to add or revise symptoms that may manifest subsequently. This adaptability increases the precision of the gathered information and enhances the overall user experience.
Ultimately, the statistics and history interfaces were redesigned to offer users a clearer perspective on their dietary consumption and symptom trends. Users can readily review records from previous days, identify trends, and gain a more comprehensive understanding of the correlation between their health and diet. These improvements resulted in a more engaging, user-friendly, and valuable application that encourages long-term user retention and enables more accurate food intolerance analysis.
