Are you interested in spending time abroad during your teacher training programme? Would you like to find out more about international exchange opportunities? Are you looking for information on the requirements and structure of studies abroad?

Student teachers have various options for augmenting their studies by spending time abroad. You can

  • improve your foreign language skills

  • get to know the language and culture of the host country in more depth and

  • gain valuable teaching and learning experience in intercultural contexts.

Spending time abroad is a valuable experience not just for future foreign language teachers. It can augment the teacher training programme as a whole and offers added value on both a personal and professional level.

As a student teacher, you can decide whether you want to study at a university abroad, teach as a foreign language assistant or complete an internship, e.g. at an international partner school.

Studies Abroad

If you’d like to spend one or two semesters abroad at a university abroad, you should familiarise yourself with the application procedure at an early stage and obtain information about the range of subjects on offer, the eligibility of your teaching or didactic subjects at the host university, as well as the transfer of credits in your subjects. You can sign so-called credit transfer agreements with your subject representatives in Bamberg, in which guidelines on the transfer of your intended course work will be documented even before you go abroad. You can also study abroad by taking up a position as foreign language assistant at American partner universities, which allows you to integrate practical experience with your academic studies.

Teaching Abroad

Student teachers have the option of gaining experience in intercultural teaching and learning through foreign language assistance programmes. Interested students can reach out to educational institutions abroad or take advantage of offers provided by Pädagogischer Austauschdienst (PAD, or “pedagogical exchange service”). You will be employed as a foreign language assistant at a host school to support the teachers in teaching German or other foreign languages.
