In research and teaching, Art History deals with artifacts of various functions, forms and periods; the focus here is on the art of Europe and the Mediterranean region as well as North America. Questions of production, reception and object history as well as the history of the discipline itself are examined, by taking into account current and historical research perspectives

In addition to architecture, sculpture and painting, the field of work also includes graphics, photography, new media and design as well as ephemeral art forms such as festive decorations and performance. The department consists of two chairs and one professorship.

Special features in Bamberg

The World Heritage city of Bamberg and the buildings and museums in the surrounding area offer a wealth of objects of study for seminars, excursions and research work. The department of Art History department is located in the building complex Am Kranen 10-12 (Hochzeitshaus) in the historic city center in the immediate vicinity of the Old Town Hall and Cathedral Square. The art didactics studio rooms on ERBA Island are also available for seminars with an art-technological focus.

One focus of art history in Bamberg is its practical orientation - in several points: in teaching, students are prepared for the professional fields of art history and can try out artistic techniques for themselves in the studio; research focuses on artistic practices as well as other aspects.

The department  of Art History is part of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences, Heritage Studies and Art History (IADK), which offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within its manyfold network.
