Project Completion of PRiME – Privacy in the Metaverse
Although the initial hype surrounding the metaverse has subsided, the underlying questions remain highly relevant. Millions of people continue to use platforms such as Roblox, Fortnite, and VRChat, while emerging technologies such as Augmented Reality are already paving the way for the next generation of immersive experiences.
Within the project, we investigated the challenges that new immersive technologies and metaverse environments pose for privacy and personal rights. Our research addressed topics such as the intensity of data collection and use, informed consent in metaverse environments, and the handling of issues such as virtual harassment and social bots. Through experiments, surveys, and interviews, we were able to systematically analyze these emerging challenges and develop concrete recommendations for designing safer and more privacy-friendly virtual spaces.
We would like to thank the entire PRiME team and all project partners for their excellent collaboration, as well as our colleague Runjie Xie, who played a leading role in driving the project forward within our research group. We are proud of what we have achieved together and look forward to bringing these insights into future research, practice, and society.
