Chair for English and American Cultural Studies

Welcome to the Professorship of English and American Cultural Studies!

English and American Cultural Studies deal with the analysis and interpretation of different manifestations of culture in Anglophone countries. Following the tradition of English and American Cultural Studies, a main focus is the exploration of collective identities and the culturally determined distribution of power in society. But instead of a narrow methodological and theoretical framework, a broader interdisciplinary perspective is adopted. As culture cannot be understood without a historical dimension, the subject includes the study of developments from the Early Modern Period on. The wide thematic spectrum of the professorship is also reflected in teaching which is accorded particular significance.
