Interactive Data Widgets

At this year’s IEEE VIS Conference, our group presented a workshop paper introducing viaWidgets—a concept that reimagines visualizations as interactive data widgets rather than static endpoints.

Instead of only viewing data, users can select, modify, and create data directly within visualizations. Imagine drawing a crescent-shaped selection on a scatterplot, sketching a target time-series pattern, or adding points directly in the plot. viaWidgets turn visualizations into modular tools that feed structured input back into data workflows, particularly useful in notebook environments.

This idea builds on prior research and modern notebook widget ecosystems, showing how richer interaction can bridge visual exploration and coding.
