The Noddack-Haus and its Green-Lab
The Noddack House in the Centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site
The historic imperial and episcopal city of Bamberg looks back on a history spanning 1,000 years. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town is a unique example of a Central European city that developed on the basis of a medieval urban structure and has been preserved to the present day. It comprises a complex urban area that grew together from three settlement centres, the hill town, the island town and the gardeners’ district. This area corresponds to the city’s expansion from the founding of the diocese by Emperor Henry II in 1007 to the end of the 16th century and was magnificently transformed in the Baroque style in the 18th century.
The buildings of the Faculty of Human Sciences and Education are located directly adjacent to the Old Town district around Burgershof. In 1988, the converted and renovated historic building of the former State Women’s Clinic, the so-called Marcus House, was occupied. The conversion of the newer part was completed in 1992. As part of this process, the adjacent washhouse of the Women’s Clinic was also converted and renovated for science education.
It was named after the natural scientists Walter and Ida Noddack. Walter Noddack was appointed professor at the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Bamberg and became director of the State Research Institute for Geochemistry in Bamberg in 1956. In addition to the Noddacks’ significant discoveries in chemistry, including the discovery of the element rhenium in 1925, they also contributed important biological insights into the carbon cycle, including CO₂ assimilation and photosynthesis, as well as into the visual pigment of the human eye.
As early as 2012, we began planning and converting the laboratories in the Noddack House. The aim of the conversion, completed in 2013, was to create a multifunctional room for designing teaching and learning processes close to school practice. The result is a new synthesis of a historic building and modern media technology.
In addition to functional laboratory equipment, we integrate current teaching and presentation technologies, such as an interactive whiteboard, which we also study from a subject-didactic perspective. Learners gain access to new forms of learning and interactive opportunities for cooperation via wireless communication through mobile systems such as MacBooks and iPads.
The GreenLab is characterised by maximum flexibility and ease of use: on the one hand, all technical infrastructure is installed above floor level, allowing the mobile furnishings to be adapted to specific requirements. On the other hand, the entire room and technology control system is operated via iPad, on which preconfigured scenarios can be selected.
The Bamberg GreenLab includes the following features:
