Relaunch of the vhb Course "Social Media Content"
About the project:
The importance of social media use is growing in both personal and professional areas. Every day, media users create a vast amount of content across various platforms and through various channels. Social media content informs, organizes, enlivens social relationships, entertains, advertises, sells, educates, creates or prevents political majorities and solves personal, organizational and economic problems. When used efficiently, it is even more comprehensive, faster, more diverse and more innovative than any other media. New technical features combined with intuitive usability increase demand for social media content.
Social media offers many advantages in both economic and personal life: On WhatsApp, Instagram or LinkedIn, it is very easy to maintain your network, receive and post the latest relevant content or discover new content. Numerous content formats, such as Stories, news flashes and interactive graphics further stimulate curiosity, search behavior and usage. With the social media boom, legal and societal problems intensify, for example “bad usage habits”, media addiction, declining attention spans, data misuse, copyright infringements and social media stalking.
All these new positive and negative developments lead to a massive need to improve the old social media content concept, which was essentially developed in 2013/2014. What is new, above all, is the action-oriented perspective that is now consistently adopted. From the very first chapter, students assume the role of journalists engaged in journalistic activities and / or entrepreneurs engaged in economic activities. Social media action competence is strengthened, particularly positioning, design and management competence (see Wied/Pies/Büsching 2020).
From a pedagogical perspective, the course focuses on various key factors for learning success identified by John Hattie (Visible Learning). These include, among others, self-assessment of one’s own performance level, micoroteaching, feedback, fostering creativity, direct instruction and case studies (see Büsching/Pies/Wied 2021).
