History can be studied as a core subject or within the context of a multi-subject bachelor’s degree programme as either a major or minor subject. The following configurations are possible:
- Core subject with 150 ECTS points
- Major subject with 75 ECTS points
- Minor subject with 45 ECTS points
- Minor subject with 30 ECTS points
In addition to this, students write a bachelor’s thesis on a topic from within their core subject or first major subject (12 ECTS points) and complete the General Studies component (18 ECTS points).
The programme is structured around the following conventional chronological periods of history:
- ancient (until c. 500 AD)
- medieval (c. 500–1500)
- early modern (c. 1500–1789)
- modern (c. 1789–present).
According to the selected programme configuration and the module type, there are either modules on individual periods or combined blocks (earlier history = ancient and medieval periods; later history = early modern and modern periods). The parts of the programme oriented around specific periods are complemented by methodological modules that provide students with the ‘tools of the trade’ for dealing with history.
The essential difference between the individual programme configurations is how broadly the historical period overviews are established in the programme (as a minor subject, only the earlier history or later history block can be covered; in all other configurations, all periods are covered) and how much time students have to gain in-depth knowledge in individual aspects.
The curriculum is taught in lectures, seminars and practical training courses. Field trips are also planned within each programme configuration.
Programme components
This core subject provides students with a thorough overview of all four historical periods, and also leaves enough space for a self-selected area of specialisation. A mandatory distribution elective component, which focuses on electives in other subject areas and aims to enable students to harness approaches and material from history’s neighbouring disciplines, completes the programme. An in-depth insight into the areas of theory, methodology and didactics, alongside the foreign language acquisition that is integrated in the programme, provides students with the necessary skills to work with historical material. A substantial mandatory internship and field trips ensure links are drawn between theory and practice.

The extended minor in History has a weighting of 45 ECTS credits and can be chosen as either a comprehensive subject, where all periods are covered, or as a specialisation in one chosen period.

The bachelor’s thesis is an independent piece of written work that shows the student has fundamental or in-depth knowledge of the subject they have studied, and that they are able to apply academic approaches to specific tasks within a fixed time period. The bachelor’s thesis is typically written immediately after the student finishes their fifth semester in that degree programme. Students have three months to complete the bachelor’s thesis. The requirements for admission to the bachelor’s thesis are governed by the applicable study and subject examination regulations for the bachelor’s degree programme in History.
The General Studies (Studium Generale) component comprises courses specially classified and therefore ‘approved’ for this purpose, which you can put together yourself to achieve the required ECTS points. It gives you the opportunity to acquire or consolidate transferable, career-relevant, didactic and foreign language skills. An internship that is closely related to your studies can also be recognised in the General Studies component with 1 ECTS point for each completed week (maximum 4 ECTS points for one internship).
