Biography:
Shyam Nandan Rai is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Chair of Explainable Machine Learning, Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg. His current research leverages foundation models, multimodality, and generalization to address challenges in healthcare.
He received his PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Politecnico di Torino, Italy, supervised by Prof. Barbara Caputo and Prof. Carlo Masone at the Visual and Multimodal Applied Learning Laboratory. His dissertation focused on anomaly segmentation for road scenes, supported by a national grant from Italy's AI & Industry 4.0 program, funded by STMicroelectronics.
Before his doctorate, Shyam completed his MS by Research in Computer Science and Engineering from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, in 2020. During his MS at Center for Visual Information Technology group, he addressed problems related to image restoration under adverse weather conditions and open-world object detection for autonomous driving with broader interest in robust visual perception. He received his BTech (Honours) in Electronics and Communication Engineering from IIIT Sri City in 2017, where his passion for visual intelligent systems first took shape.
His research has been published in leading venues including ICCV, ECCV, PAMI, TIP, WACV, BMVC, NurIPSw, and IROS. In addition, he actively contributes to the research community as a reviewer for CVPR, ECCV, ICRA, IROS, and BMVC.
