Navigating the Heart of Franconian Switzerland
The route for this year's excursion challenged participants with two demanding stages through the stunning Fränkische Schweiz. Starting in Streitberg on May 28th, the group navigated approximately 25 kilometers of impressive dolomite rock formations and deep river valleys before reaching Pottenstein for the night. The following day, the trek continued for another 24 kilometers through the varied, karst-studded landscape of the Klumpertal, ultimately finishing beneath the historic castle in Egloffstein. Despite the hot weather, with temperatures reaching up to 28 degrees Celsius, the extensive shade provided by the trail's lush forests ensured excellent hiking conditions.
Forging Connections and Building Resilience
Beyond the physical challenge, the core purpose of the xAI Hike remains the fostering of our academic community. The excursion brought together PhD candidates, research staff, and BSc/MSc students at various stages of their academic journeys, alongside external collaborators and close research partners. After completing the exhausting first leg of the journey, the group spent a well-deserved, relaxed evening at the Gasthof Goldene Krone in Pottenstein. Over dinner and drinks, participants engaged in lively conversations: exchanging experiences about research, career paths, and life outside of the university setting, completely independent of the daily lab routine.
A central philosophy of the xAILab is advocating for the importance of physical activity in our daily lives. Even when work becomes highly stressful, maintaining an active lifestyle is essential to staying healthy and continuing to give 100% on the job. Engaging in sports directly translates to professional success by building both mental and physical stamina, which reduces fatigue during demanding workdays. Regular training sharpens focus and discipline, teaching us to perform under pressure and fostering the resilience required to push through difficult research projects. Furthermore, physical activity serves as a powerful stress reliever: lowering cortisol levels and resetting the nervous system so we can approach complex workplace obstacles with a clear head. Finally, sharing these demanding trails improves communication and teamwork, proving that the collaborative skills we rely on are just as crucial on the mountain as they are in the lab.
The xAI Hike Tradition and the Frankenweg
The 3rd xAI Hike took place from Thursday, May 28 to Friday, May 29, 2026. This annual event is part of a long-term goal to conquer the renowned 520-kilometer "Frankenweg" (from the Rennsteig to the Swabian Alb) stage by stage. Certified as a premium hiking trail ("Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland"), the Frankenweg reflects the immense diversity of the region like no other route, connecting six distinct Franconian holiday destinations. Starting in the north within the green wilderness of the Frankenwald, the trail winds through the gentle Obermain.Jura region, the cave-rich Fränkische Schweiz, and the castle-studded Nürnberger Land. It then brushes past the waterscapes of the Fränkisches Seenland before concluding in the Jurassic landscape of the Altmühltal Nature Park and the Swabian Alb.
This year's specific iteration highlighted the Fränkische Schweiz, an area famous for its subterranean marvels like the Binghöhle and Teufelshöhle, as well as its rich density of medieval castles.
Science, Stamina, and Moving Forward
The excursion once again proved that stepping away from the desk and engaging in shared, demanding physical activities is incredibly valuable for team cohesion. We return from the Fränkische Schweiz with sore legs but fresh perspectives, stronger interpersonal connections, and a renewed appreciation for an active lifestyle. With two more challenging stages of the Frankenweg successfully completed, motivation remains exceptionally high. We look forward to continuing this tradition and tackling the next kilometers of the trail in the coming years!
