BAMΞ Invites Applications for Postdoctoral Position on Next-Generation Theories of Consciousness
The Bamberg Mathematical Consciousness Science Initiative (BAMΞ) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join its Next-Generation Theories of Consciousness Project (NEXTOC). The full-time position is offered for two years, starting on 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Consciousness science has recently seen the emergence of a range of novel research programmes, including for new phenomenological and contemplative methods, dynamical and structural modelling, novel measures of consciousness, meta-theoretical arguments, lessons from adversarial collaborations, new data infrastructure, and tests for consciousness in animals and AI. Integrating these developments with each other, and with theories of consciousness, remains a central open challenge for the field.
NEXTOC addresses this challenge by developing frameworks, strategies and a new paradigm for formulating theories of consciousness that can integrate these research directions.
The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Johannes Kleiner, co-director of BAMΞ, and will take part in BAMΞ's research sprints, workshops and residency programme. Applications are welcome from all disciplines, provided the applicant's PhD or postdoctoral work engaged directly with consciousness.
The application deadline is 5 November 2026. Further details and application instructions can be found in the full call for applications or on our Research Opportunities page.
We gratefully acknowledge our sponsor, DS13 GmbH, represented by its managing director, Dr. Dennis Schmoltzi, for financial support of this project.
