Bamberg Center for Artificial Intelligence
The Bamberg Center of Artificial Intelligence (BaCAI) is the research hub for AI research at the university of Bamberg, integrating eight professorships exclusively dedicated to a broad range of research fields within AI, additional eleven professorships of computer science and information systems with strong relations to AI as well as AI applications in industry, healthcare, and education. The profile is strengthened by strong interdisciplinary collaborations with humanities and social sciences through association with the Center for Innovative Applications of Computer Science (ZIAI).
Artificial intelligence and machine learning have been a central aspect of teaching and research at the faculty since 2004. The focus is on the development of comprehensible, interactive, transparent and robust intelligent technologies that aim to support humans through AI and not to replace humans with AI. With method-orientated foundational research, AI research at the WIAI enjoys an international reputation.
Mission Statement
BaCAI’s mission is to advance AI research for a positive impact on people’s lives. The center aims to be a beacon of multidisciplinary AI expertise, world-class research, and educational excellence to shape the transformative potential of open AI systems, foster sustainability and economic growth, and nurture regional, national, and international talent.
Degree Programmes
The Faculty of Information Systems and Applied Computer Science (WIAI) at the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg offers degree programs in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work successfully in these disciplines.
B. Sc. AI & Data Science
This Bachelor's degree program is aimed at anyone who wants to understand the technical and mathematical background of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. The interdisciplinary approach combines computer science with statistical and mathematical methods, as well as their applications in the social sciences and humanities. Students can choose from three areas of specialization:Data Science, General AI, and Information Systems. In addition to the core curriculum, essential competencies in AI ethics are taught and practical projects are conducted to create a solid foundation for career entry or further graduate studies.
B.Sc. Applied Computer Science (Multiple AI Specializations)
The Bachelor's program in Applied Computer Science optimally prepares students for the diverse tasks that arise for computer scientists in an increasingly digitalized world. This well-founded education is oriented toward current developments and offers specializations such as Computer Graphics, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Information Visualization. In the elective area, students can explore various application fields—ranging from economics and communication sciences to psychology, culture, and media—to prepare for interdisciplinary collaboration in the development of innovative IT solutions. The program also imparts extensive knowledge in Artificial Intelligence, including machine learning, speech processing, and the development of cognitive systems.
M. Sc. Applied Computer Science (AI Specialization)
The Master's program in Applied Computer Science prepares students for the diverse challenges in informatics created by ongoing digitalization. Alongside a thorough education, the program offers exciting areas of focus, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Here, students acquire expertise in machine learning, cognitive modeling, as well as image and language processing. The degree program promotes a deep understanding of requirements in various application areas and enables the acquisition of practical experience through projects and elective modules that bridge the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science.
