Preview: New Edited Volume “The Cold War and Welfare State Development in Industrialized Countries”

Oxford University Press is expected to publish the new edited volume "The Cold War and Welfare State Development in Industrialized Countries" in August 2026. The handbook is edited by Carina Schmitt of the University of Bamberg, among others, and provides a comprehensive overview of the development of welfare states in 14 industrialized countries during the Cold War.

Individual chapters adress the key questions of whether, how, and to what extent the Cold War influenced the development of the welfare state in Europe and North America.

The volume explores the relationship between national and social security from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, bringing together research from political science and history in an interdisciplinary approach.
